The Springville child who accidentally shot and killed himself Tuesday was the son of a police officer.

The 2-year-old boy shot himself with a handgun at the family's home, sometime around noon or 1 p.m., Deputy Utah County Attorney Tim Taylor said Wednesday. Emergency responders arrived to find that the boy had died from the accidental gunshot.

Taylor's office has been investigating the incident since the boy's father is a Springville police officer; the boy's mother also works for the city.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Taylor had not heard whether the handgun was his father's service weapon.

Two of the investigators on the case were scheduled to speak at a conference on officer-involved shootings Wednesday and were tied up there, Taylor said.
