A 22-year-old was critically injured Saturday night after he plowed through two concrete barriers, drove across two railroad tracks and a state highway before losing control of his vehicle and crashing it.
Weber County Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Lowther said the man was northbound in a Chevy Impala about 11:10 p.m. on 4300 West near West Weber when he encountered a dead-end.
Instead of stopping, Lowther said the man drove through two jersey barriers — thick concrete barricades that are about three feet tall — and then across the tracks and State Highway 39. In all, he drove about 200 feet before he lost control and rolled his car.
When deputies arrived, the car was on fire and the man was lying in the back seat, Lowther said.
Deputies quickly extinguished the flames and the man was flown to Ogden Regional Medical Center for treatment of an internal head injury and numerous other injuries.
He wasn’t wearing a seat belt, investigators said.
Lowther said the crash remained under investigation. He said speed was a factor and deputies were investigating whether anything else, including alcohol, was involved.
No one else was injured. Highway 39 and the nearby railroad tracks were closed for about hours overnight while deputies investigated.
