Volunteers plant trees on the slopes
Volunteer Ileana Anderson, of Park City, plants a tree at Alta Ski Area on Saturday. More than 50 volunteers helped Tree Utah and the Alta Environmental Center plant 1,800 plants and trees around the ski resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon.
Tree Utah planned to plant a total of 3,000 seedlings to help Alta diversify its tree canopy, according to Ross Chambless, of Tree Utah.
During the mining boom of the 1800s, there was significant deforestation in the area. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps planted trees in Little Cottonwood Canyon, but they were all Engelmann spruce.
Volunteers on Saturday planted Douglas fir, subalpine fir and limber pine, as well as Engelmann spruce, Chambless said.
