A 44-year-old woman was in stable condition Friday, the day after she was struck by a FrontRunner commuter train during a suicide attempt.
Sunset Police Chief Ken Eborn said doctors had put the woman into a medically induced coma overnight in preparation for surgery. The woman had been conscious in the moments after Thursday morning’s incident on the southbound tracks near 6000 South and 2400 West in Sunset, Eborn said.

Before being rushed to University Hospital in Salt Lake City by medical helicopter in critical condition, the woman had told emergency workers that it had been her intent to commit suicide when she laid herself down on the tracks about 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
However, witnesses told investigators that the woman appeared to have changed her mind at the last second, attempting to move off the track before being clipped by the train.
Eborn also said there were also indications the woman had sent messages to family indicating she planned to end her life.
Utah Transit Authority spokesman Gerry Carpenter said no one on the train was hurt.
