A 43-year-old Duchesne County man will spend a maximum of five years in prison after he was charged with raping a 16-year-old girl in 2011.
Eighth District Court Judge Lyle Anderson sentenced Scott Darren Shields to spend an indeterminate amount of time in prison — not to exceed five years — after the man pleaded no contest to attempted forcible sex abuse, a third degree felony.

Shields was originally charged with rape, a first degree felony, but the charge was reduced as part of a plea deal. He was also charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor, a class A misdemeanor, but that charge was dismissed.
In early October 2011, Shields gave a 16-year-old girl alcohol and raped her at his Roosevelt home, according to charges filed in 8th District Court.
When police spoke to Shields, he admitted touching the girl, but said he did not have sex with her, according to court documents. He also told police that he had given alcohol to multiple teens who were at his home, charges state.
According to a statement filed in court, Shields admits that he touched the breast of the 16-year-old girl, and took "indecent liberties with her, without her consent."
