A 26-year-old woman is in the hospital after failing to make a turn while going up Big Cottonwood Canyon Saturday afternoon.

Witnesses told police that at about 12:45 p.m. the woman in a Toyota Camry was driving faster than posted speed limit near 7000 East and 6400 South, according to Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.

It was at the big S turn near Moss Ledge the woman failed to make the turn and rolled down the hill before stopping near Big Cottonwood Creek.

"It was about a 60-foot drop," Hoyal said.

The woman was transported by medical helicopter to Intermountain Medical Center in serious condition with head injuries, Hoyal said.

Heavy rescue crews were called to the scene and were able to extricate the woman and pull the Camry with "significant body damage" from the ravine.
