Two children fell several stories out of windows in different cities within 30 minutes on Thursday afternoon, and one of them suffered life-threatening injuries.
In West Jordan, a 2-year-old boy fell three stories at about 1:30 p.m. after pushing out a window screen at the Woodgate Apartments, 3851 W. Cobble Ridge Drive (6960 South), according to West Jordan Battalion Chief Reed Scharman.
The boy fell about 20 feet and landed on his back on a metal window well. The toddler was flown by Life Flight to Primary Children's Medical Center in "extremely critical condition," Scharman said.
The child had to climb on something to access the window because it was not at floor level, Scharman said.
Meanwhile, just after 1 p.m. in Magna, a 3-year-old boy also was injured in a fall from a window at 3541 S. Candis Drive (7275 West). He was transported to Primary Children's Medical Center, according to Unified Police Sgt. Ken Jarbis.
The child was complaining of stomach pains after falling 10 to 15 feet from an upper bedroom window in the split-level entry home.
A long fall for small children is defined as anything more than double their height, Scharman said. So six feet is considered a long fall for a toddler.
"This is well beyond that," Scharman said.
