A southbound TRAX light rail train collided with a car in Murray just before noon Wednesday, killing an Idaho woman and injuring her husband.
Murray police spokesman Kenny Bass said the accident occurred just before noon when the southbound Honda CRV apparently made a left turn against the light from 300 West approaching 5900 South.
"The left turn arrow was red, but it looks like the vehicle made a left turn anyway. The barrier arms were down and the lights were flashing at the TRAX crossing at the time," Bass said.
The car collided with the train on the driver's side and was then dragged about 100 yards between the train and a concrete barrier wall before the train could be stopped. The female driver, 72, was killed, and emergency crews had to extricate her husband, 73, from the wreckage before he was transported to Intermountain Medical Center in serious condition. The identity of the couple will not be released until all of next of kin were notified.
Utah Transit Authority spokesman Gerry Carpenter said the train's operator and passengers were unharmed.
A bus bridge transported commuters around the accident site, between the TRAX stops at Fashion Place and Murray Center, Carpenter said.
