A Utah State University football player will serve jail time for punching an acquaintance at a party, but he will be allowed to leave jail for school.
Maurice Alexander was sentenced Tuesday to one year jail time, with all but 45 days suspended for a guilty to plea to aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a misdemeanor.

Alexander, 21, was accused of punching an acquaintance in January after a party in Logan, according to court documents. At the party, Alexander and another man were shoved into each other and had a verbal argument. After the party, Alexander approached the other man in the parking lot and punched him in the face, police wrote. The man fell to the ground and was unconscious for a short time; he then was taken to the emergency room for surgery to repair a fractured cheekbone, shattered bones in his eye socket and a cut.
