Park rangers at Grand Teton National Park found the body of a 31-year-old Salt Lake City man Friday after he fell about 600 feet in a rock-climbing accident on Thursday.
Eric Tietze was climbing the Cathedral Traverse on Thursday with three friends when he separated from the group and went ahead. He fell to his death shortly after leaving his friends, according to a Grand Teton National Park press release.
Crews searched by air and by ground for Tietze but weren't able to locate his body until Friday mid-afternoon due to inclement weather.
Tietze left his friends when they were finishing the final rappels off a shoulder peak west of Teewinot Mountain. When the others reached the summit of Mount Owen, they waited for Tietze, but he never arrived. They reported him missing and a search by helicopter began early Friday morning. He was found on the East Prong rock area between Teewinot and Mount Owen.
