The Salt Lake County Government Center at 2001 S. State St. is now a smoke-free campus.

As of July 1, employees and patrons can light up in only two places: on the west side between the North and South buildings near the flag pole and on the northeast side at the southeast corner of the lower-level parking garage.

The move, decreed by Mayor Peter Corroon, goes further than restrictions adopted in 2000 that barred smoking within 25 feet of any door.

On its website, the county noted that employees and visitors were being exposed to secondhand smoke upon entering and exiting buildings.

"Every year," the county noted, "more and more national, state and local workplaces are choosing to implement smoke-free policies."
