Funeral arrangements have been finalized for a Utah Highway Patrol trooper who died over the weekend during a search and rescue accident.
Funeral services for Trooper Aaron R. Beesley, of Bear River City, 34, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Northridge High School, 2430 N. Hill Field Road, in Layton.
Beesley, a 13-year UHP veteran, died Saturday while on a mission to rescue two lost hikers on Mount Olympus, east of Salt Lake City. Beesley spotted the young hikers and threw his medical bag out of the helicopter as he went to assist the hikers, troopers said. The bag rolled further than expected, and after loading the children inside the helicopter, Beesley tried to retrieve the bag, but apparently lost his footing and slid about 90 feet down a steep hill to his death, authorities said.
A public viewing will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the high school and from 9 to 10 a.m. the morning of the funeral.
Funeral services will be followed by a public procession and interment at the West Point Memorial Cemetery, 80 N. 4000 West, in West Point.
A memorial fund has been set up in Beesley’s name at any America First Credit Union.
Beesley leaves behind a wife and three young sons.
