Carolynn Burt, a longtime West Valley City councilwoman, died Sunday after a long battle with leukemia.
Diagnosed in 2010, Burt continued to serve on the council, fulfilling her final term as District One Council member in December 2011. Burt served for more than 13 years on the council.
Burt had lived in West Valley City since 1961 and had been a small business owner since 1964. In addition to her service on the West Valley City Council, she served on the city's Strategic Plan Update committee and on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.
Burt was an avid swimmer and passionately advocated for swimming programs in West Valley City and throughout Utah. She served as the Utah Swimming president, USA Swimming Western Zone Officials Chair and as a volunteer official with Unites States Swimming for more than 20 years.
"News of Carolynn's passing has been met with heavy hearts throughout the city," said Mayor Mike Winder in a statement. "We are mourning her loss not only as a colleague but as a dear friend and tireless ambassador of West Valley City."
