Salt Lake City's YWCA dedicated a new Center for Families at its downtown campus Wednesday, accomplishing its goal of providing a one-stop location where women and other adults in unsafe relationships can find a full range of comprehensive support services.

The new 17,000 square-feet center houses the YWCA's community education program and the expanded Salt Lake Area Family Justice Center, and is located across a courtyard from its shelter and transitional residential apartments.

The YWCA will offer its "CHOICES for Women" relationship, parenting and other life-enhancing classes on the main floor. The justice center will occupy the second floor, offering a secure, confidential site where women and men who have experienced abuse can get help. On-site partners include the YWCA, the Salt Lake City Police Department Domestic Violence Unit, Salt Lake City Prosecutor's Office, SLPD Victim's Advocates, Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office, Department of Workforce Services, Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake, Holy Cross Ministries, and the Department of Child and Family Services.

"Programs within this building will empower women for life and love, and will also protect and support those in troubled, unsafe relationships, and give them hope and resources for a better future," said Anne Burkholder, the YWCA's chief executive officer.
