Robert B. Smith, an emeritus University of Utah research professor of geophysics, has been awarded the Geological Society of America’s George P. Woollard Award for outstanding contributions to geophysics.
Smith is an expert on earthquakes and volcanism in the Yellowstone-Grand Teton National Park region, a news release said.
The Woollard Award is Smith’s second national commendation in as many years. He was honored in 2011 with U.S. Geological Survey’s John Wesley Powell Award.
In addition to his U. of U. post, Smith is a coordinating scientist at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory operated by the U.S. Geological Survey, U. of U. and the National Park Service.
He will receive the Woollard Award in November at the society’s annual group meeting in Charlotte, NC.
