Urban Flea Market opens in downtown Salt Lake City

On Sunday, about 50 vendors set out secondhand and handmade treasures during the opening day of the second annual Urban Flea Market in downtown Salt Lake City.

The marketplace is held in the parking lot of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce building, located at 175 E. 400 South.

The free event is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month through Oct. 14.

Selections included original artwork and jewelry, new, used and handmade clothing, furniture, tools, vintage records, antiques, collectibles and oddball knickknacks.

Several vendors said they set up booths to sell items they've collected through the years — to make room for more.

"We go out looking for stuff, and when we want to update what we have, we put it up for sale," said vendor Diana Ungricht, who called herself "a hunter gatherer."

Seller Michael Pace joked to browsers that he travels the world looking for items "so you don't have to. Draper. Murray. We have it all."

Jeff Wood did find something after stopping while on a bike ride: A 9/16ths open-end box wrench — the exact size missing from his set.

"What a nice surprise to find this here," he said.

Shopper Sam Savage said he was amazed at the quality of the items for sale as well as the low prices.

"Haggling encouraged," one sign at a booth announced.

Food trucks were on hand, and area restaurants, many normally closed on Sundays, were open.

Inside, beverages and snacks were for sale. The market also featured family-friendly music and pets for adoption from animal rescue groups.

Kate Wheadon, founder of the flea market, said more vendors are expected over last year's count, and spaces are larger.

This year, individual 10-foot by 17-foot booth spaces are available to rent for $40 a day.

Parking on the lot is $1 per hour, and there were plenty of parking spaces on the street.

Sponsors include Salt Lake City, Downtown Alliance, Now & Again, Catalyst, City Weekly, Edible Wasatch, Metro Display, Molding Box, Our Store, Q Salt Lake and SLUG.
