Utah Highway Patrol troopers are blaming an abandoned mattress for a fatal motorcycle accident on Interstate 15 late Monday.

The accident occurred near Willard in Box Elder County about 10:45 p.m. The motorcycle rider, Royce W. Munns, 46, of Brigham City, was not wearing a helmet when he struck the mattress in the southbound lanes of I-15, according to UHP.

UHP says a medical helicopter was dispatched, but Munns was eventually pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. UHP is investigating how the mattress ended up on the freeway, and trying to identify its owner.
