Mix alcohol, a combative attitude and a stolen handgun. Add a dash of police presence.

Voilà! Jail time.

Salt Lake City police say three men, ages 20, 19 and 18, were booked into Salt Lake County lockup on suspicion of charges ranging from interfering with and assault upon a police officer to possession of a stolen firearm, providing false information and alcohol violations.

The men had clashed with the law Thursday night in west Salt Lake City's Poplar Grove neighborhood, 850 S. Emery St. (1170 West). The three allegedly had been drinking and when approached by officers, the group decided to fight before being subdued and taken into custody.

A subsequent search of one of the men's backpacks turned up a handgun that had been reported as stolen, police said.
