Washington County wildfire about 80 percent contained

Cool overnight temperatures have helped southern Utah fire crews get a better handle on a wildfire burning in southern Utah.

By about 5 p.m. Sunday, the Washington County fire was about 80 percent contained, officials with the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands reported. The fire started about 2:15 p.m. Saturday when someone lost control of a campfire about five miles north of Virgin in the Smith Mesa area.

By Sunday morning it had consumed about 123 acres, but burned around two cabins and a camp trailer on private land. Two other cabins were threatened, but no damage had been reported to structures.

No one was injured. Crews remained on scene continuing to mop up, officials said.
