A wildfire near Hurricane closed a stretch of highway for a few hours Tuesday night but was blowing away from homes.

The fire was burning near the Angel Heights neighborhood in the southeast part of Hurricane, dispatchers said. Winds were blowing flames away from houses. Several agencies were fighting the fire.

A segment of State Road 59 was closed near the fire but had reopened as of 11 p.m.

The fire had reached 1,000 acres late Tuesday and was not contained, the Bureau of Land Management reported.
