A helicopter rescued two people early Saturday after the day hike they planned had turned into a long, late night on a mountain.

A 20-year-old man and 21-year-old woman, both of the Salt Lake Valley, left 6 a.m. Friday for a hike up Corner Canyon, according to Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal. When the two were making their way down from Lone Peak, they got disoriented and strayed from the trail.

At about 9:30 p.m., the duo used a cellphone to contact parents, who then called police. The uninjured man and woman were located through GPS and a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter flew to pick them up, Hoyal said.

They were safely off the mountain by 1 a.m. Saturday.
