Salt Lake City firefighters twice extinguished a stubborn freight trailer fire in an industrial area on Thursday morning.

Fire Department spokesman Jasen Asay said crews were called to the scene of the blaze at 1900 S. Industrial Road (1900 West) about 9:30 a.m. and found the trailer, parked outside a warehouse, spewing smoke and flames.

Firefighters doused the fire, but shortly thereafter it began again to smolder and reignited. Crews extinguished the blaze once more, this time for good.

Asay said investigators learned the trailer previously had been the scene of an acid spill. Absorbent material was put down on the floor and the trailer was then reloaded with baby food and other goods. "There apparently was a chemical reaction that produced heat and then combustion," he said.

The trailer's scorched merchandise was unloaded after firefighters were sure the blaze was finally extinguished.

No injuries were reported.

A damage estimate was not immediately determined.
