An electrical equipment failure led to closure of a downtown Salt Lake City stretch of the TRAX light rail line for several hours Wednesday afternoon.

Utah Transit Authority spokesman Gerry Carpenter said a hanger mechanism securing a power line that runs above the trains broke about 12:30 p.m. at 250 West and South Temple. The line fell partway, damaging two TRAX cars, but causing no injuries.

Full service was restored just after 3:30 p.m., once the lines were repaired and damaged TRAX cars removed and replaced, Carpenter said.

Meanwhile, riders were shuttled by bus from the Arena station to the City Center station.

Since May 5, the TRAX rails running west and south from the Arena station to the Salt Lake Central hub connecting to the FrontRunner commuter train have also been closed down while construction work is being done on the new TRAX spur to Salt Lake City International Airport.
