First Published May 08 2012 12:03 pm • Last Updated Aug 28 2012 11:32 pm

Utah Highway Patrol troopers are trying to identify a body found Monday in Riverdale.

The dead man was white, was in his late 50s or early 60s and was about 5 feet 7 inches tall with a thin build, a UHP news release said. The man also had dark gray medium-length hair and possibly a short goatee. And, UHP said, he had a green military style backpack with three large pockets on the outside and smoked a pipe with "4 Aces" mint pipe tobacco. UHP is asking anyone who might know the man contact its Ogden offices at 801-629-8221.

UHP Cpl. Todd Johnson said a Utah Department of Transportation employee was working near the Interstate 15 and State Road 26 overpass at about 9 a.m. Monday when he smelled what he thought was a decaying animal.

When the worker investigated, he found the decomposing body of a man beneath the overpass, Johnson said.

He said authorities aren’t sure how or when the man died. He said the man had no identification, but there were some items around him that suggested he was a transient.

Johnson said the body has been turned over to the state medical examiner’s office.
