A woman killed Friday night in a two-car rollover in Spanish Fork Canyon has been identified by the Utah Highway Patrol as Rebecca Dorton, of Mount Pleasant.
Dorton, 36, was driving north on U.S. 89 near the town of Birdseye about 6:30 p.m. with her 1½-year-old son when her 2010 Mazda drifted off the road to the right, UHP states.
Dorton overcorrected and crossed the double yellow line into southbound traffic. The Mazda hit the rear bumper of a passing southbound car, then continued spinning across the road. A passing Chevy Silverado hit the Mazda as it was spinning, and both vehicles rolled, with the truck resting upside-down, according to a release from UHP.
Dorton, who was not wearing a seat belt, was killed instantly, UHP states. Her son had two broken collar bones and a broken leg and was flown by helicopter to Primary Children’s Medical Center. The driver of the truck was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators don’t know what caused Dorton to drift off the road. The investigation is ongoing.
