$11.6M awarded to improve highway in Arizona Strip to Utah state line

Arizona Strip, Ariz. » An $11.6 million contract has been awarded to repave a remote section of Interstate 15 north of the Grand Canyon.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says that despite the highway’s remote location in a sparsely populated area known as the Arizona Strip, Interstate 15 is a key corridor.

The contract will pay for a repaving project on a 16-mile segment of the interstate from the Virgin River to the Utah state line.

The department says other improvements need to be made to the section of Interstate 15 that goes through the Virgin River Gorge between St. George and Littlefield, Ariz.

The department is conducting a study for improving all eight of the Virgin River bridges, built more than 40 years ago.

Estimates of those improvements are as high as $250 million.
