Holocaust rescuers honored at Salt Lake City service

Members of Utah’s Jewish community honored heroes who chose to act and rescue Jews during the Holocaust at services Thursday in Salt Lake City.

Prayers, poetry readings, music and memorial candle lightings paid tribute to the rescuers, along with the 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust, as well as survivors, witnesses and World War II veterans, according to a news release.

John Price, a real estate developer and former ambassador to Mauritius, spoke at the event held for Yom Hashoah, or Holocaust Commemoration Day, at the Jewish Community Center.

Price’s family escaped Germany after suffering the horrors of Kristallnacht, a two-day attack on the Jews in 1938 that left more than 90 dead and landed 30,000 more in concentration camps.

Herr Trautschold, a non-Jew, helped the Prices get passports and flee to Panama, the news release said.
