The pulpit area of the LDS Conference Center was damaged after a small fire broke out in a mechanical work room Monday night.

When crews arrived to fight the two-alarm fire, it already had been extinguished by the building's sprinkler system, said Salt Lake City Fire Department spokesman Jasen Asay.

However, the sprinklers kept on spraying, and crews were struggling to clean up "more than a couple of feet" of water in the mechanical room and around the pulpit, which is directly below the fire, Asay said. Thousands of gallons spilled into the first 10 rows of the auditorium, Asay said. There also was some smoke damage.

No other part of the building was affected, he said.

West Temple was closed between 200 North and South Temple during the incident, Asay said.
