Lt. Kevin Iffland told The Billings Gazette (http://bit.ly/zkmRL7 ) the woman suffered life-threatening injuries when she was hit at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Iffland says witnesses reported the woman walked up to the crossing arm, saw the train coming and waited until it got close before stepping out onto the tracks.

BNSF Railway spokesman Gus Melonas says the eastbound train was traveling at 23 or 24 mph and its whistle was blowing. He says the crew saw the woman and applied the emergency brakes but the train was unable to stop in time.
