On Feb. 9, Unified police officers responded to a report of a shooting at 4520 W. 4865 South and found a man lying in the road with a gunshot wound to the head, court documents state. The bullet entered the right side of the man’s head and came out on the left side. Police found a used shell casing near the man and some broken glass.

Six blocks away officers found an abandoned 1995 Nissan Altima parked on the wrong side of the road on the sidewalk. The driver’s side door window was broken and a lot of blood was inside the car.

A witness said they had seen Rohwedder driving the car a little before the victim was found in the street, the charges state.

The victim — who was taken to a local hospital — told officers all he remembered before being shot was driving in the car alone with Rohwedder as the passenger.

Unified Police Department Lt. Justin Hoyal citing concerns for the victim’s safety, did not identify the victim or know if the man was still in the hospital Thursday night. He said last he heard the victim — who was in critical condition a week ago — was improving.

Rohwedder pleaded guilty to third-degree felonies assault by a prisoner and attempted escape from official custody in 3rd District Court in 1995, according to court records.
