The driver in a fatal hit-and-run crash in Taylorsville will spend six months in jail before being turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

Samuel I. Ramos, 26, surrendered in December, just hours after the family of 22-year-old Alexander Atkin held a candlelight vigil and asked for the driver to step forward.

Ramos, of El Salvador, pleaded guilty last week to a third-degree felony count of failure to remain at the scene of a fatal accident. Four other charges against him were dismissed and Ramos agreed to be sentenced immediately by 3rd District Judge Judith Atherton.

A passer-by found Atkin's body Dec. 12 near a crosswalk at 4835 S. 2700 West. Police say Ramos was returning home from work and was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
