An early morning fire Wednesday forced evacuation of an Ogden apartment complex while firefighters braved flames to rescue a trapped renter.

Deputy Ogden Fire Deputy Chief Chad Tucker said the 1:38 a.m. blaze at 3290 Van Buren Ave. was believed to have begun in a stairwell and spread into a hallway, cutting off the tenant, who called 911 to report the fire, from escape until firefighters reached her.

Flames and smoke caused an estimated $25,000 in damage at the Versailles Apartments. The fire was quickly doused, and all but two tenants were able to return to their apartments. The Red Cross is assisting those temporarily homeless renters with shelter.

Tucker said no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire has been determined to be electrical in nature, Tucker said.

In all, 24 firefighters responded from Ogden, South Ogden and Weber County.
