The snacks the hungry man chose probably weren’t mother — and definitely not police — approved.

So police said he went into a grocery store about 3 p.m. Tuesday near 3900 and Wasatch Boulevard in Millcreek and helped himself to cookies, a donut, energy drinks and other food items. Then he allegedly tried to leave without paying for his meal and employees tried to stop him, but he managed to escape out the front door and dashed into a nearby bank building, said Unified Police Department Lt. Justin Hoyal.

Once inside the bank, Hoyal said, the man ran into the basement and hid under the sink. When he wouldn’t come out, authorities evacuated the bank.

Officers then released a dog and flushed the man out of hiding. The whole incident lasted about 20 minutes, Hoyal said.

If there was a hidden blessing for the hungry man, it was this: Police said he’d certainly get a meal Tuesday night at the Salt Lake County jail.
