Maybe he should have stolen some running shoes.

Instead, Salt Lake City police say, a 36-year-old man with a handgun inside Payless Shoe Source at 973 W. North Temple grabbed a pair of brown leather hiking boots and cash from the till and fled about 5:45 p.m. Thursday.

The suspect was quickly located by responding officers, who found him at 600 W. 200 South — still in possession of the cash and what proved to be a stolen handgun, and wearing the boots.

Salt Lake City police Detective Dennis McGowan said it also turned out that the suspect matched the description of a man who held up the Berner & Buresh Eye Clinic at 250 E. Broadway on Monday. During that robbery, the gun-wielding suspect demanded cash and grabbed a pair of glasses as he fled the scene.

The suspect was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of two counts of aggravated robbery and possession of a stolen firearm.
