Downtown Salt Lake City, Layton gas leaks stall TRAX, evacuate homes
First Published Feb 10 2012 08:30 am • Last Updated Feb 10 2012 10:54 pm

A natural-gas leak that shut down a two-block section of downtown Salt Lake City and TRAX light rail service through the area kept repair crews busy well into Friday morning.

However, the leaking line had been located and repaired by 2 a.m. near 300 West and South Temple, allowing TRAX lines from 400 West to 200 West to be reopened for the Friday morning commute.

"Everything is up and running fine this morning," Utah Transit Authority spokesman Gerry Carpenter said.

UTA had operated a bus bridge for TRAX passengers between its City Center and Salt Lake Central stations beginning 4:30 p.m. Thursday and running through the end of scheduled TRAX trains late Thursday night.

The leak was located in a 6-inch line buried about 4 feet underground, beneath thick layers of concrete.

Meanwhile, occupants of six homes in Layton who were affected by a gas leak were able to return to their residences shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday. Construction crews drilling a fiber-optics installation near 2200 West and Antelope Drive ruptured a 4-inch natural-gas line about 1:15 p.m. Thursday, prompting the home evacuations.

Questar crews made repairs by 5 p.m., but it took roughly two more hours for public safety officials to give the all-clear, a Layton fire dispatcher said.
