Layton police Thursday found a body buried in the yard of a Roy home, but said it will likely be several days before they will know whose body they found.

Layton police Lt. Garret Atkin said the body was discovered about 3 p.m. as investigators were digging in the last of three holes in the yard of a home at 3812 W. 4550 South in Roy, searching for evidence pertaining to the disappearance of missing of 25-year-old California man Victor Flores.

Atkin said he didn’t know condition of the body, how long it may have been there or how deep it was buried when investigators discovered it. Authorities, he said, would have to wait until the autopsy, which was scheduled for Saturday, to determine whose body it was. He said there was no obvious indication on how the person died.

Authorities had been painstakingly searching inside home’s interior and digging in the surrounding yard since Monday on a tip that some evidence pertaining to their missing person’s investigation might be in Roy, Atkin said.

"[The] discovery was the result of a great deal of effort," he said.

Atkin said no arrests had been made in the matter.

"We still have to establish what crime was committed if any, and what jurisdiction it was committed in," he said.

Atkin said he didn’t know who had buried the body there or why.

He said Flores, of San Gabriel, Calif., was last seen alive in late May in Layton after he came to Utah looking for work.

In June, as Flores’ friends and family raised alarms, and Layton police issued a public appeal for help finding him, declaring his disappearance to have occurred under "suspicious circumstances."

During a June interview, Sandra Banuelos, a friend of the Flores family in California, told The Salt Lake Tribune that Flores had left for Utah on May 7 with an acquaintance — later identified by police as Daniel Rivera, a Weber County jail escapee — who promised Flores a construction job. Flores later called home to say the trip had turned out to be "a bad idea" and that he planned to return to California because the job offer was bogus.

"No one has heard from him since," Banuelos said.

Rivera, 33, is currently serving up to 15 years at the Utah State Prison in Gunnison for drug and escape convictions.
