The altercation leading up to the shooting apparently began when two men, one 21 and the other 29, walked by a parked car with two other men inside and a verbal exchange occurred.
"There was a physical fight and one of the males from inside the car pulled a handgun. The 21-year-old and 29-year-old men fled across the street and one of the men from the car fired several rounds, one of which struck the 29-year-old male in the leg," police Sgt. Mike Powell said.
The men in the car sped away westbound on 3500 South. Their vehicle was described as a silver, late-model, four-door Chrysler 300-M sedan, police said.
The wounded man was transported to the hospital, treated for his gunshot wound and released, Powell said.
Powell said investigators were looking into possible gang connections to the incident, but had yet to determine whether that was the case.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to call West Valley City police at 801-840-4000.
