The impact derailed the train’s lead car.
Two to three dozen people were reported to be in the train at the time of the crash. None of them was injured, police said.
Debris on the southbound TRAX track initially halted train traffic in both directions, police said. The UTA set up a bus bridge to transport passengers around the affected TRAX section.
After long delays, trains were running normally by 8 p.m.
Salt Lake City police were investigating the crash.
