Unified Police Department investigators were trying to unravel a fatal mystery Wednesday morning in Kearns.

UPD Lt. Justin Hoyal said a 31-year-old man died at 2:47 a.m. when his Honda Accord slammed into the back of a parked semi-trailer rig at 4810 S. 5600 West.

Hoyal said witnesses reported seeing the car swerve erratically just before the crash. There were no skid marks at the accident scene and police believe the car hit the truck at about 40 mph, the posted speed limit in the area.

"We’re trying to figure out what happened. We don’t believe drugs, alcohol or excessive speed are factors in this. He may have been drowsy or distracted, but at this point we just don’t know," Hoyal said.

The identity of the victim was being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Hoyal said that was proving difficult Wednesday, as the man’s relatives were apparently all outside the country.
