The Tribune relives the heady days of the 2002 Winters Olympics in pictures — with a daily gallery from the torch relay to the Opening Ceremony, from Team USA’s medal haul to the fireworks-filled finale.

Feb. 17 » Speedskater Chris Witty of the U.S. sets a world record while winning gold in the women’s 1,000 meters just weeks after contracting mononucleosis, with teammate Jennifer Rodriguez claiming the bronze medal. Both hockey tournaments continue, with the star-studded Canadian men averting disaster with a 3-2 win over Germany, and Italy’s Daniela Ceccarelli wins gold in the women’s super-G. Six days after controversy erupted, pairs skaters Jamie Sale and David Pelletier finally feel the weight of gold medals around their necks during a special ceremony making them co-champions, along with Russia’s Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze.
