The University of Utah is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the 2002 Winter Games with an exhibit at the Marriott Library that commemorates the roles of regular Utahns in staging and enjoying the event.
The U.'s "Olympic Experience Exhibition" brings together dozens of photographs and numerous artifacts such as Olympic pins, training manuals and coats. They will be on display in the Eccles reading room on the library's fourth level through Feb. 29.
The U. campus provided a vital stage for the Salt Lake Olympics, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies at Rice-Eccles Stadium and the Olympic Village at Fort Douglas.
Marriott's special collections department asked members of the university community to provide photographs they took of Olympic festivities and events, according to multimedia archivist Roy Webb. More than 4,000 images were donated.
"We'd love to see more donations from the public," said Webb, who helped curate the exhibit with Krissy Giacoletto. "It is through individuals that we are able to archive historic collections for future generations."

Archivists chose 50 images to be individually displayed in the Marriott exhibit, and package many more into two large collages. Included in the exhibit is a student-made documentary, produced by Spy Hop Productions during the games.
"The film focuses on the visiting international community's perception of Salt Lake City and how the city attempted to welcome the world while working with its conservative/religious reputation and features interviews with city officials, event organizers, and various people visiting the city for the games," wrote Molly Creel, the library's moving image and sound archivist.
Material from the Marriott's special collections is also on display this month in commemorative exhibits at Park City's Alf Engen Ski Museum and the Kimball Arts Center. —
Olympic Experience Exhibition
P During February, the University of Utah's Marriott Library is exhibiting photographs and memorabilia from the 2002 Winter Games. The material was drawn from the Utah Ski Archives, which are part of the library's special collections, and will be displayed on the library's fourth floor in the Eccles reading room. The library has also contributed material to monthlong Olympic exhibitions at the Alf Engen Ski Museum and the Kimball Arts Center, both in Park City, as well as the Feb. 18 event at Salt Lake City's Gateway Center Grand Hall.
