A 50-year-old heavy equipment operator continued to fight for his life Tuesday, the day after being flung from a bulldozer as it plunged down the edge of a West Valley City gravel pit.

University Hospital spokesman Phil Sahm confirmed that Mark Dean, who had been flown by helicopter to the Salt Lake City medical center late Monday in extremely critical condition, was still alive Tuesday. However, at the Dean family’s request, specifics on his injuries and condition Tuesday were not being released.

Dean was driving the bulldozer on the edge of a gravel pit at 6800 West and 5400 South when he lost control of the vehicle, said West Valley City Fire Battalion Chief Bob Fitzgerald.

The bulldozer fell about 40 feet into the gravel pit and then rolled, ejecting Dean. A piece of the rig came loose and pinned the victim until he was extricated by firefighters.
