The charge against a Utah personal-injury attorney who brought a gun to Salt Lake International Airport will be dismissed in six months if he has no other offenses in that time.

Craig Swapp, 49, entered a plea in abeyance last week in Salt Lake City Justice Court to one count of possessing a dangerous weapon in an airport secure area.

Swap was charged in November with the infraction after Swapp said he mistakenly left the .38-caliber handgun in his bag on Nov. 17, as he planned to fly from Salt Lake City to Boise, Idaho.

"It was a dumb mistake," Swapp said Monday. "You just try to move on from it."

Swapp said he would normally store the weapon in a vault at his Sandy home, and forgot he had the weapon inside his briefcase. Transportation Security Administration officials said the weapon was loaded with six rounds of ammunition.

As part of his plea, Swapp paid a $300 fine and was ordered to forfeit the handgun, court records show.
