Salt Lake City has tapped a veteran consultant who has aided transportation projects in France and the United Kingdom to serve as its new transportation director.
Robin Hutcheson, who also has played central roles planning the city’s complete streets initiative, streetcar strategy and sustainability focus, replaces Tim Harpst, who retired at year’s end.
“We’re very lucky to have a transportation expert with Robin’s experience and skill set in this key position,” Frank Gray, Mayor Ralph Becker’s community and economic development director, said in a statement. “I look forward to both a seamless transition following Tim Harpst’s excellent tenure and an exciting future for the transportation division under Robin’s leadership.”
Hutcheson will oversee programs focused on broadening bicycle and pedestrian travel, streetcar development and parking.
The skier, cyclist and outdoor enthusiast also will be asked to promote the mayor’s livability agenda, which calls for transportation plans that reduce air pollution and improve mobility and quality of life. “Nationwide, Salt Lake City is becoming a progressive transportation leader,” Hutcheson said in a statement. “I am thrilled to be a part of this team.”
Hutcheson worked as a senior associate with the Fehr & Peers consulting firm and is co-founder of the Women’s Transportation Seminar, Northern Utah Chapter. She also is an accredited planner with the American Institute of Certified Planners.
