Police have identified the man who was fatally injured when an east Salt Lake City patio roof collapsed on him.

Salt Lake City police said Jose Garcia, 48, died when the wooden covering, attached to the back porch of a house near 2500 E. Kensington Ave. (1522 South), fell on him just before 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Garcia was one of a five-man crew working at the home on a re-roofing project. He was on a ladder underneath the patio roof when it gave way, trapping him under the rubble. By the time firefighters were able to get to him, Garcia had died.

Garcia’s remains were turned over to the state medical examiner’s office pending further investigation.

Police could not confirm the victim’s hometown as of Thursday.
