An eastern Utah oil drilling rig worker was seriously injured when his hand was caught in machinery at an XTO Energy well site about 60 miles south of Vernal.

XTO Energy spokesman Jeffrey Neu confirmed Wednesday that the accident occurred about noon Monday at the company’s Little Canyon Unit near Roosevelt. He declined to release further details, citing an ongoing internal company investigation of the incident.

However, the Uintah County Sheriff’s Corporal Brian Fletcher identified the injured man as Patrick Wisener, a 48-year-old Roosevelt resident.

The man reportedly caught his hand between moving pipes at the drill site as they were being lowered into the well bore.

Fletcher said he did not have an update on the man’s condition Wednesday, but his injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration reportedly is investigating the accident.
