How glorious downtown Salt Lake City looked then.
Turn one way and you’d see a ski racer, must have been 10 stories tall, carving a hard turn around a gate. Look left or right and your view would be dominated by pictures of other winter athletes covering whole sides of big buildings — a ski jumper taking flight, a torch-relay runner holding the flame aloft, a biathlete in a tuck on Abravanel Hall.

Overlooking it all were the Olympic rings themselves, blazing forth from a temporary perch on the northern foothills.
Even fencing around Games venues had a jubilant look about it, covered with the sharp angular lines of snowflakes that defined Salt Lake City’s "Look of the Games."
The panorama from the top bleachers at Olympic Medals Plaza was breathtaking, the Wasatch Mountains looming behind the decorated skyline.
One regret: Why can’t it always look like this?
