Three semi-trailer rigs, a passenger car and a Box Elder County sheriff’s deputy were involved in a multi-vehicle crash early Friday on Interstate 84 near Tremonton.
Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said four people were hurt. One person — a 34-year-old Salt Lake City man — was flown to a Salt Lake City hospital in critical condition after the 3 a.m. accident on eastbound I-84. Black ice on the road reportedly was a factor in the chain-reaction accident.

I-84 was restricted to one lane of travel for several hours following the accidents, which occurred between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. They began when the first semi, hauling a single trailer, jack-knifed on the slippery roadway and was struck by a second semi, hauling an empty fuel tanker. A third semi then slid on the ice and collided with the tanker.
The 34-year-old victim had facial and head injuries, Johnson said. The driver of the tanker rig, a 67-year-old woman, and her co-driver — a 59-year-old man resting in the rig’s sleeper compartment — were taken to area hospitals with back and chest injuries. The driver of the third semi, a 52-year-old Virginia man, was treated for minor injuries at the scene and released; his co-driver, a 49-year-old Maryland man, was taken to the hospital complaining of a back injury.
About 4 a.m., a black SUV approaching the accident scene too fast went out of control and collided with a Box Elder County sheriff’s pickup truck, but no injuries occurred from that crash, Johnson said.
No citations were immediately issued and the accidents remained under investigation Friday.
