A Utah State Prison inmate already serving a possible life sentence will have up to 30 years tacked on for a carefully orchestrated attack on another prisoner.

In November 2005, Nathan Redcap, 27, used bed sheets to strap magazines to his torso as body armor, tied metal "shanks" to his hands and waited in the shower for the inmate.

The man suffered a number of cuts and puncture wounds, including one that narrowly missed his carotid artery.

Last year, Redcap was convicted of three second-degree felony counts for the attack.

Redcap is already serving up to life in prison for raping a woman in August 2001.

Redcap, then 17, escaped from a youth program with another teen. While staying at a South Salt Lake motel, the teens invited a woman over for a party and proceeded to sexually assault her before beating her and leaving her for dead, according to news reports.

On Wednesday, Redcap was sentenced in 3rd District Court to up to 30 more years in prison.

In a pending case, Redcap is accused of raping a cell mate in 2007.
