SWAT standoff in Taylorsville ends peacefully

A 48-year-old Taylorsville man was in jail Wednesday after he surrendered to SWAT officers at the end of a tense armed standoff.

Taylorsville police Sgt. Tracy Wyant said the incident began as an alcohol-fueled domestic dispute call shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday. When officers arrived, they were able to get both a woman and her granddaughter out of the residence near 3500 West and 5600 South, but the male suspect remained inside, armed with a rifle and refusing to come out.

"At one point after the initial response by police, one shot was fired inside the residence. Due to the circumstances, we called the SWAT team out to the location," Wyant said.

About 1 a.m. Wednesday, the suspect came out of the house and was taken into custody without further incident, Wyant said.

"He came out on his own accord. No one was injured," Wyant said. "It was a bad situation that ended as positively as it could."

The man was booked into the Salt Lake County jail and was being held in lieu of $5,920 bail on suspicion of charges ranging from discharging a firearm within city limits, possession of a dangerous weapon while under the influence of alcohol, domestic violence in the presence of a child to criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.
